We are just starting school so let’s talk about another issue that you may be going through with your children.

Bullying – I often say that all Kindergarteners need to be bullied! I know that you are shocked but hear me out.
Bullying is not going to go away, it has always existed and always will. It does not just happen at school. It happens everywhere throughout your life, your boss, your spouse, your boyfriend/girlfriend, your coach, your friends, etc.
Learning how to handle this should start at a young age. They need to be good at dealing with it before adolescence when you throw in alcohol, drugs, cars, weapons, etc.
The solution to bullying is quite simple, it’s the Golden Rule. This means that the solution starts at home with morals and ethics and general compassion. Treat others how you want to be treated.
Bullies to Buddies says to treat everyone that way even those that aren’t good to you.
They don’t have to be your friend and we should not be friends with people that are not good to us. Even as adults we should not do that. However, treating everyone with respect because they exist is crucial.
Treat everyone like a friend not like an enemy. Love and Logic says…
• Teach children that bullies get their power from our negative emotions. The more upset we get when picked on, the more powerful mean kids feel.
• Show your child how to trick bullies by pretending to be calm. If our children can learn to act calm when bullies hassle them, they become far less attractive targets.
• Teach your child to confuse or bewilder bullies by responding to verbal taunts with replies like, “Thanks for noticing” or “I appreciate the feedback.”
